Capture NX actually does acolor maniputaion well too and doesn't alter your NEF files, only stores the changes your and the original as captured is intact.Ĭonsider Photoshop as more of a final image editor/image manipurtaion sofware whicle the capture NX is more like a 'digital negative' manipulator. I personally would rather trust and editing system that actually reads NEF files NATIVELY so that means Capture NX. Capture NX acts exactly as you took the picture with your camera while Lightroom changes the colors, saturation and vibration settings of your picture which becomes almost impossible to get close to the one in your camera.

I just wanted to add that you can not compare these both software regarding dealing with the colors. I have been using them side by side for a month and NX's output is much better than LR. I believe it is called "U Point"Īfter almost two months of testing with both pieces of software, I've decided I will be purchasing Capture NX2.Ĭapture NX 2 is my option too. Capture NX2 has some amazing technology for adjusting specific parts of your photos without affecting the rest. Once I became familiar with the clunkier UI of Capture NX2 (took me about 1 week of decent use,) I was able to make my photos more visually appealing than in Lightroom. Capture NX2 is much less expensive and closer to my budget. There is excellent documentation on Lightroom, especially the video tutorials at Organizing, filtering and selecting photos is much easier in Lightroom Lightroom's UI is amazing and a pure joy to use What I've discovered through my testing is: Start to Finish Landscape Edit Using Adobe Lightrooms New Tools - by Robert K Baggs 9h Adobes updates for Lightroom and Photoshop have been well received, with a lot of positivity surrounding what can now be automated comfortably. I've been trying both Capture NX2 and Lightroom 2.1. I would like to use only capture nx for the first nef adjustments, but I'm concerned about losing image quality when exporting to photoshop So as long as I can I will use photoshop for most of the processing. The thing is that I've been using photoshop for such a long time that it would be a big problem for me if I had to change it now.

However, PPS does not completely protect the EXIF file, especially if you include geotag data. I have used a Paint Shop Pro, a cheap alternative to PS, to carry out some of the manipulations that PS does.

My suggestion is to try the trial downloads available from Nikon and Adobe. Photoshop also gives layering options etc. NX and Lightroom do not really offer this and Photoshop is the only option. It really depends if you want to manipulate photos. Capture NX is half the cost of Lightroom and much cheaper than Photoshop, unless you opt for photoshop elements. This is Nikon Capture NX for the rest of us. I think thats a general opinion i have read from the other discussions.Ĥ. 8 With a shutter speed as fast as 1/500 second, it adds a folding bellows. Photoshop/Lightroom 2.1 has a better User Interface. Capture NX can be very slow on some systems.ģ. Levels, lens correction, colours and general file adjustments are similar to those offered in Photoshop/Lightroom 2.1.Ģ. Capture NX deals with NEF files in more depth and you have direct control over D-Lighting and Picture Controls in the RAW data. Re: Lightroom 3 vs Capture NX 2 for RAW editing In reply to NickBrisbane The U Point technology (control points) was developed by Nik Software as a plug-in for Photoshop, and is still available in a product called Viveza 2. There have been several discussions on this subject.ġ. I have the Nik Collection, but honestly the only tool I use is Viveza. What are the pros and cons in processing nef files using capture nx or photshop? What is the best way to do it in terms of quality? You had to leave your spot to go to the end and flag it so it went with your batch export at the end. I've always used Viveza in Photoshop, it has been a couple years, but I seem to remember it being rather clunky in Lightroom and that it made a new copy of the image that was stored a the end of the batch.

Use the Pro or HDR mode to get precise controls, apply pre-defined filters, and use Technology Preview to see the best capture. Use depth mode to capture photos in HEIC format.

With Lightroom you can also batch apply basic copyright and tags upon upload, batch apply edits like lens corrections/white balance/shadows etc. Learn how to capture stunning DNG and raw photos on your iPad or iPhone with the in-app camera in Lightroom for mobile. You still have to wait for those thumbs and when opening up a photo to 100% takes a couple seconds it might as well be a couple hours. Lightroom ain't no speed-queen either, but in 3 years it has crashed maybe twice on me. I certainly didn't miss the program crashing all the time. The only thing I missed from Capture was the U-point and it was easier to save and rename photos one by one after you edited. Worth switching! Expect a learning curve.
